About KML

KML (Keyhole Markup Language) is an OGC-standard XML format originally created for Google Earth. It supports points, lines, polygons, styling, and 3D extrusion, and is widely used for sharing geospatial annotations.

Typical producers: Google Earth, Google My Maps, QGIS, OGR/GDAL.
Typical consumers: Google Earth, Google Maps, ArcGIS Earth, Marble.

How to view a KML file

  1. Open the viewer.
  2. Drag your KML file (.kml) onto the page, or click the + in the Places panel.
  3. The file renders on a 3D MapLibre globe. Use the right-hand panel to toggle background layers (borders, labels, roads, buildings, transportation, places, terrain).
  4. Click features for details, or use the bottom toolbar to convert to another format.

KML viewer FAQ

Can I view a KML file without Google Earth?

Yes — drop the .kml on rooot viewer in any modern browser. Renders on a 3D globe with toggleable backdrops.

Does this support KML placemarks, paths, polygons, and MultiGeometry?

All four. ExtendedData attributes are preserved as feature properties.

Are KML <Style> elements respected when rendering?

Geometry is preserved exactly; rooot viewer applies its own dark-theme styling for visual consistency. Convert to Shapefile or GeoPackage to preserve attribute properties for downstream tools.

Is rooot viewer free?

Yes. No account required. There are no per-conversion or per-view charges.

Does rooot viewer upload my files?

Files are parsed server-side for rendering but are not persisted unless you click Convert or Open in roooute. Persisted files are deleted within 24 hours.

Privacy

Files dropped on the main viewer are parsed server-side for rendering but are not persisted. Persistence happens only when you click Convert or Open in roooute; persisted files are deleted within 24 hours. Direct conversions through the per-format converter pages do not persist anything at all.
