About Garmin FIT
FIT (Flexible and Interoperable Data Transfer) is the binary recording format Garmin devices write. It contains GPS trackpoints with cadence, heart rate, power, and altitude. Tools like rooot viewer extract the geographic track for use on a map.
How to view a Garmin FIT file
- Open the viewer.
- Drag your Garmin FIT file (.fit) onto the page, or click the + in the Places panel.
- The file renders on a 3D MapLibre globe. Use the right-hand panel to toggle background layers (borders, labels, roads, buildings, transportation, places, terrain).
- Click features for details, or use the bottom toolbar to convert to another format.

Garmin FIT viewer FAQ
How do I open a Garmin .fit file without Garmin Connect?
Drop the .fit on rooot viewer. The trackpoints are decoded and rendered as a LineString on a 3D map.
Does this work with .fit files from Garmin Edge, Forerunner, Fenix, or Vivoactive?
Yes — any device that writes the standard FIT activity record. Wahoo, Polar, and Suunto FIT exports also work.
Are heart rate, cadence, or power preserved?
rooot viewer extracts the geographic track only. Convert to GPX to preserve lat/lon/elevation for downstream tools, or use TrainingPeaks for full metrics.
Can I convert a Garmin FIT to GPX online?
Yes. Drop the .fit, pick GPX in the Convert dropdown, click Download. Done.
Is rooot viewer free?
Yes. No account required. There are no per-conversion or per-view charges.
Does rooot viewer upload my files?
Files are parsed server-side for rendering but are not persisted unless you click Convert or Open in roooute. Persisted files are deleted within 24 hours.
Privacy
Files dropped on the main viewer are parsed server-side for rendering but are not persisted. Persistence happens only when you click Convert or Open in roooute; persisted files are deleted within 24 hours. Direct conversions through the per-format converter pages do not persist anything at all.
