About DXF

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is the open ASCII variant of AutoCAD's drawing format. Civil engineers, surveyors, and landscape architects ship site plans and topographic surveys as DXF when sharing across tools. CAD coordinate systems are arbitrary — rooot viewer renders the geometry as-is on a globe centered at the origin if no georeference is present.

Typical producers: AutoCAD, BricsCAD, QGIS, OGR/GDAL, Rhino.
Typical consumers: AutoCAD, QGIS, GIS workflows, most CAD tools.

How to view a DXF file

  1. Open the viewer.
  2. Drag your DXF file (.dxf) onto the page, or click the + in the Places panel.
  3. The file renders on a 3D MapLibre globe. Use the right-hand panel to toggle background layers (borders, labels, roads, buildings, transportation, places, terrain).
  4. Click features for details, or use the bottom toolbar to convert to another format.

DXF viewer FAQ

Can I view a DXF file in the browser?

Yes. Drop the .dxf on rooot viewer and the entities (lines, polygons, points) render on a 3D map.

My DXF has no georeference — what happens?

CAD files often store coordinates in arbitrary local units relative to a survey origin. rooot viewer renders the geometry directly; if it appears far from your expected location, the CAD coordinate system needs explicit georeferencing (typically via QGIS or a survey adjustment).

How do I convert DXF to GeoJSON, Shapefile, or KML?

Drop the .dxf, choose the target from the Convert dropdown, click Download. The OGR DXF driver handles entity-to-feature conversion.

Does this support DWG?

No — DWG is the binary cousin of DXF and Autodesk-proprietary. Export to DXF from your CAD tool first.

Is rooot viewer free?

Yes. No account required. There are no per-conversion or per-view charges.

Does rooot viewer upload my files?

Files are parsed server-side for rendering but are not persisted unless you click Convert or Open in roooute. Persisted files are deleted within 24 hours.

Privacy

Files dropped on the main viewer are parsed server-side for rendering but are not persisted. Persistence happens only when you click Convert or Open in roooute; persisted files are deleted within 24 hours. Direct conversions through the per-format converter pages do not persist anything at all.
